Snippets from the Alif Ba Ta Program (17th-19th February)

The name “Alif Ba Ta” is the abbreviation of “Agama” (religion), “Bangsa” (nation) and “Tanah Air” (country) in the Jawi scripture. This indicates that these three elements are interconnected in various aspects. Alif Ba Ta is a program that can raise awareness on various aspects among Malaysian students in the United States. Student’s life is not only restricted to scheduled classes and exams. Activities and programs that can shape leadership quality and positive personality should be held and in order to produce dynamic and versatile individuals. These individuals are the human capital of Malaysia who will be the future leaders and drivers of the country in politics, economy and social sectors.

Theme:  “The Conflict of Generation: The Character and Significance of Student Revivalism”
Overview
ALIF BA TA 2012 will present theoretical framework for understanding the emergence and development of students’ revivalism in Malaysia. Our starting point is the recognition that orthodox characters, such as character of Malaysian, which are typically used for understanding the emergence of students’ revivalism, are inadequate in accounting for the development of revolutionary aspirations among students. What ALIF BA TA 2012 wants to acquaint is the fact that students’ revivalism are revivalism of the young, and the best way to understand them is to see that they are rooted in generational conflict. Generational tensions are, of course, endemic in history since, on the one hand, young people must break free from the “constraints of the mind” and establish an independence existence, and, on the other hand, young people are typically most attuned to the necessity for social and cultural change, change likely to be resisted by elders.
